Growing up in Appalachia, you did not always have modern kitchen utensils. You used what you had in the kitchen as well as in the remainder of the house. A new broom was often times kept to use for testing anything that was baking in the oven. Break a stem and insert it into your cake or bread if it comes out clean, without any of the batter on it, the cake or bread is done. Our broom tester is smaller, than but just as accurate as the larger broom. Hang it in the kitchen as a curiosity piece or use it to test your baked goods.
